- The use of “ ceoi4 liu5” (除了) (except) has two different meanings in Chinese; that is “inclusion/addition” and “exclusion”. Therefore, we have to take extra care when using this word in order not to bring any ambiguous meaning.
- The first way to use “ ceoi4 liu5” (除了) in Chinese is to add information. For example,
“ Ceoi4 liu5 fo1 hok6, ngo5 waan4 hei2 fun1 sou3 hok6” (除了科學，我還喜歡數學)。 In this example, one wants to show that he/she likes not only Science, but also Mathematics.

- In contrast, the other way to use “除了” is totally different from the first one. For example, “ Ceoi4 liu5 fo1 hok6, ngo5 sam6 mo1 fo1 muk6 dou1 hei2 fun1” (除了科學，我什麼科目都喜歡) 。In this example, one wants to show that he/she likes all other subjects, except Science. It means that he/she doesn’t like Science at all. (Exclusion)
